A long time ago, the Chinese emperor presented a giant panda bear as a symbol of peace to the Japanese emperor. Since then, the Japanese emperor has entrusted his courtiers with the difficult task of caring for the panda and its bamboo garden.

In Takenoko, you must cultivate plots of land, water them, and grow different types of bamboo (green, yellow, and pink) with the help of the imperial gardener to maintain the bamboo garden. You will need to satisfy the panda's immense appetite for juicy bamboo. The player who manages the land best, grows the most bamboo, and feeds the panda wins the game.

How to play Takenoko:

In Takenoko, the tallest player starts. Except in the first round, you always begin your turn by rolling a die to decide the weather – the result can be one of the following:

• Sun – you can perform an extra action.
• Rain – you may place a piece of bamboo on a tile that has irrigation.
• Wind – you may perform two identical actions.
• Storm – you may freely move the panda, which eats a piece of bamboo where you place it.
• Free choice – you may choose one of the above weather conditions.

Once the die has determined the weather, the player may perform two actions – but not the same one twice. The following actions can be chosen:

• Land tiles – take three tiles from the stack and place one of them, so it borders either the lake or two other tiles. The remaining two tiles are placed at the bottom of the stack.
• Irrigation – take one irrigation channel and place it between two tiles, so that it is connected either to the lake or to another irrigation channel. A tile counts as irrigated if an irrigation channel is placed on one or more of its edges.
• Gardener – move the gardener in a straight line between two tiles. The tile you land on must be irrigated. A piece of bamboo in the tile's color is planted where he lands, as well as on adjacent tiles of the same color that also have water.
• Panda – move the panda in a straight line between two tiles. Take a piece of bamboo where it lands, and place it on your play board.
• Card – draw a card with game objectives to your hand. You can have a maximum of five cards in your hand.

The game is about scoring points by solving the objectives on the cards. An objective might be, for example, having three green tiles next to each other, having a bamboo four pieces tall on a yellow tile, or being able to deliver two pieces of red bamboo.

If you have fulfilled the objective on one of your cards, you may place it on the table – the player who first solves seven cards ends the game and takes the emperor card, which gives two additional points. All other players now get one more turn before the game ends. The winner is the one with the most points – if there is a tie, the player with the most points from the panda card category wins.
